A Clear View, a Bigger Impact: Glass Handrails at Loyola Donnelly’s Science Center

A glass handrail may look like a finishing detail, but its impact on a space can be much greater than you might expect.

At Loyola University’s Donnelly Science Center Renovation and Addition in Baltimore, our team at Chesapeake Glazing has completed the installation of glass handrails, introducing clean architectural lines while preserving the openness of the surrounding space.

But what makes glass such an effective choice for this application?

Why Transparency Matters

A handrail has an important functional purpose, but the material used can also influence how people experience the architecture around it.

Unlike an opaque barrier, glass allows sightlines to continue beyond the boundary. The result is a space that feels more visually connected without compromising the purpose of the handrail.

It’s a simple concept with a significant architectural impact: defining a space without visually dividing it.

This is one of the reasons glass has become such a valuable material in modern commercial construction. It can serve an essential function while allowing the surrounding architecture to remain the focal point.

The Right System for the Right Purpose

Of course, transparency isn’t always the goal.

At Loyola’s Donnelly Science Center, our broader scope also includes curtain wall, sunshades, composite panels, fire-rated glazing, and specialty privacy systems.

These applications demonstrate an important principle in commercial glazing: different areas of a building demand different solutions.

Some benefit from uninterrupted visibility. Others require privacy, solar control, or specific fire protection measures.

Successful glazing isn’t about using as much glass as possible. It’s about understanding what each space needs the glass to accomplish.

Working alongside The Whiting-Turner Contracting Company, we’re proud to see another element of this project completed.

As the renovation and addition continue progressing, we look forward to sharing more of the architectural systems taking shape throughout the Donnelly Science Center.
