Old buildings do not need to be frozen in time.
The best ones continue to evolve, finding new ways to serve the people who move through them, gather in them, and give them purpose.
The Cole Head House at the University of Maryland is a building with history, recognition, and a strong connection to campus life. Through the Cole Cultural Center Fit Out, the space was renovated to support new Cultural Center programming while improving the daily experience for the people who use the building.
For Chesapeake Glazing, this project was a reminder that thoughtful glazing can help modernize a historic space without taking away from the character that makes it meaningful.

A Thoughtful Update to a Legacy Campus Building
Renovating an existing building requires balance.
The goal is not to erase what came before, but to help the building serve a new chapter. That means improving function, comfort, visibility, and performance while respecting the structure’s original presence and connection to campus.
On a project like the Cole Head House, the glazing package plays several roles at once. It helps bring natural light deeper into the building, creates visibility and connection between spaces, supports updated performance goals, and modernizes the user experience without taking away from the character of the existing structure.

Chesapeake Glazing’s Scope
Chesapeake Glazing’s scope included exterior and interior storefront systems, framed entrances, curtain wall, aluminum clad wood windows, glazing films, louvers, and a structural glass canopy roof.
Together, these systems helped support both the function and feel of the renovated space. The storefront and curtain wall systems contribute to openness and visibility. The aluminum clad wood windows help connect modern performance with a more traditional appearance. The glazing films, louvers, entrances, and structural glass canopy each add to the way the building works for the people using it every day.
In a renovation, details like these matter. They help bridge the gap between preservation and progress.

Supporting the Next Chapter
The result is a thoughtful upgrade that allows a legacy campus building to continue serving the University of Maryland community for years to come.
The Cole Head House shows how existing buildings can be adapted with care. They can honor their history while becoming more accessible, useful, and connected to the needs of today’s campus life.
At Chesapeake Glazing, we are proud to have contributed to the next chapter of the Cole Head House and to a project that proves old buildings do not need to stand still to remain meaningful.
