More Than a View: Why Windows Matter in Academic Buildings

Students, faculty, and researchers spend long hours in classrooms, labs, atriums, and study spaces. The way these spaces are designed can influence comfort, focus, movement, and connection.

Research from Harvard’s Healthy Buildings program reinforces this idea, noting that school buildings can affect student health, thinking, and performance.

Natural light is one important part of that experience. A daylighting study of more than 21,000 student records across 2,000 classrooms found that students in classrooms with the most daylight progressed faster on math and reading tests than students in classrooms with the least daylight.

That does not mean more glass is always the answer, it means windows and glazing systems need to be designed and installed thoughtfully. They must balance daylight, views, glare, temperature, building performance, and connection to the surrounding environment.

The Towson University Science Complex is a strong example of that balance.

Completed with The Whiting-Turner Contracting Company, the 320,000 square foot facility is the largest academic building on Towson University’s campus. The building includes classrooms, teaching labs, research labs, lecture halls, collaboration areas, and a multistory central atrium that Towson describes as the heart of the building, with space for students to collaborate and study.

Chesapeake Glazing’s scope included rainscreen installation, insulated metal wall panels, curtain wall and storefront systems, glass entrances, and aluminum doors.

On a project like this, the glazing package is not just about the exterior look of the building. It helps support the building envelope, bring natural light into the space, create visibility between areas, and connect the building to the campus around it.

CannonDesign notes that the building’s façade was designed to help control internal temperature through optimized fenestration, while atrium skylights allow daylight to reach deeper into the atrium.

That is the real value of thoughtful glazing.

It supports how a building performs and how it feels to the people inside.

For Chesapeake Glazing, this project is a reminder that glass is never just glass. It is part of how a building welcomes people in, supports learning and research, and creates spaces built for discovery.
