Precision in Practice: Punch Window Installation at UMD School of Social Work

At the University of Maryland School of Social Work Building, punch window installation is actively progressing, and this phase is setting the tone for the performance of the entire façade.

While it may look repetitive from the outside, each opening presents its own set of variables. Field conditions, tolerances in the structure, and sequencing all come into play. That is why the focus is simple but critical: every unit needs to be set right the first time.

Installation begins with layout and verification of openings, making sure dimensions align with shop drawings and that substrates are properly prepared. From there, each unit is set, aligned, and anchored, with careful attention to plumb, level, and consistent spacing. Even small deviations at this stage can compound across the elevation.

Water management is a major factor driving that level of precision.

Improper alignment or gaps outside of tolerance can compromise the system, creating pathways for water intrusion. Once that happens, it is no longer just a window issue it becomes a building envelope issue, impacting interior finishes, schedule, and overall project cost.

To control that risk, the team is utilizing prefabricated window systems along with the appropriate setting equipment in the field. Prefabrication helps ensure consistency in manufacturing, while the right equipment allows for controlled placement and adjustment during installation. Together, they create a more predictable process without sacrificing efficiency.

This façade includes double and triple ultraclear insulated glass with bird frit, working to improve thermal performance, control solar gain, and enhance occupant comfort.

As shown in the video, installation is moving steadily, but not at the expense of quality. Each unit is checked, adjusted, and integrated into the surrounding system to ensure continuity of the air and water barrier.

With a significant portion of curtain wall installation still ahead, the accuracy of the punch window work is critical. Alignment between systems, transitions at interfaces, and overall façade performance all depend on the foundation being set now.

The façade is beginning to take shape, and this is just the start of how the building will come together.

More to come as progress continues!
